Why soil compaction is a problem for Minnesota lawns

What is core aeration?
Core aeration is a mechanical process in which hollow tines remove small plugs of turf and soil. The openings provide temporary channels through which air, water and nutrients can enter the root zone.
The University of Minnesota Extension notes that effective core aeration must use hollow tines or spoons that bring soil cores to the surface. The process can improve moisture and air penetration, encourage deeper rooting and stimulate the microbial activity involved in thatch decomposition. Core aeration can be appropriate when:
- Soil is severely compacted and needs immediate physical openings.

What is a C20 application?
C20 Soil Builder takes a biological approach to aeration. Rather than physically removing soil, it supplies carbon-based material that feeds microorganisms already present in the soil.
As microbial activity increases, biological materials help bind soil particles into aggregates and create additional pore space. This can reduce soil bulk density while improving the conditions for water movement, oxygen exchange and root development. The University of Minnesota explains that soil microbial activity contributes to aggregate formation and that well-aggregated soil provides better aeration, infiltration, drainage and water storage. According to Minnesota-based manufacturer Precision Organics, C20 is made with natural grain by-products formulated at a 20-to-1 carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. The product is designed to stimulate microbial activity, reduce compaction, support root development and improve water retention without disturbing the turf’s surface.
A controlled ryegrass study presented at the 2015 Soil Science Society of America Annual Meeting found that C20-treated soil had reduced bulk density and that treated ryegrass developed stronger root and plant growth under the study conditions.
It is important to understand that C20 is not a fertilizer. It does not replace a properly designed fertilization program. Instead, it improves the soil environment in which roots, microorganisms and applied nutrients must work.

When core aeration may still be the better choice
C20 is not intended to make mechanical aeration obsolete in every situation. Core aeration may still be recommended when a lawn is extremely compacted, when new seed needs access to exposed soil or when excessive thatch requires more aggressive intervention.

Do not overlook soil testing
Compaction is not the only reason a lawn may struggle. Incorrect pH, insufficient nutrients, excess nutrients, poor grass selection, shade, irrigation problems and disease can produce similar symptoms.
The University of Minnesota Extension recommends soil testing every three to five years. A test provides information about soil texture, pH, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium, helping property owners avoid unnecessary or poorly targeted applications.
